In 1964 a scheme was initiated in partnership
with the Colchester and District Water Board (now
Anglian Water). The purpose was to impound winter
flood water of the River Colne, using a storage
reservoir to be constructed in the Salary Brook
valley between Colchester and Ardleigh. The Ardleigh
Reservoir Committee was set up to construct and
operate the works on behalf of the two undertakings.
Today the reservoir is owned equally by Tendring
Hundred Water and Anglian Water, with running costs
shared between the two. The reservoir holds 2,200
million litres of water, and has a top water area
of 136 acres. Around 25% of the Company's water
resource needs come from the site.
Most of the water supplied from Ardleigh originates
from the River Colne where river levels are carefully
monitored to ensure minimal environmental impact.
After initial treatment the river water is stored
in the reservoir, which further improves the quality.
Advanced treatment then produces the final water
which is fit for consumption.
The smooth running of Ardleigh Reservoir is ensured
by a team of 11 staff, operating independently of
Tendring Hundred Water and Anglian Water. Ardleigh Reservoir Committee,
which oversees the operations, manages the reservoir
on behalf of the water companies.
As well as being a vital source of water, the
area also provides a picturesque setting for Ardleigh
Sailing Club and various other water sports. View
