Bogus callers travel the country, choosing locations
with a high density of older residents or mixed
communities within easy access of main or arterial
roads. It is thought that they often travel hundreds
of miles between offences and move on following
a concentrated period of offending. Their constant
movement makes detection and capture by the police
very difficult.
Bogus callers are very
convincing and very persuasive. They talk their
way into homes and then steal cash and valuables
while the occupier is distracted in some way. Sometimes
they work in pairs, one distracting while the other
steals.
Bogus callers often gain
entry by posing as water, gas or electricity company
officials.
